Why do talking dolls speed up over time?

I have owned several dolls that have had a string coming out of the back that makes the doll say 3-4 phrases when pulled. (Pee-Wee Herman is probably the most famous one)

With every single one, after 5+ years, the phrase comes out very fast and the voice is really high-pitched.

Does anyone know *specifically* why this happens?
