Open Question: Is it legal for my school to lock me in a closet every day for 2 weeks (as punishment)?
I got dobbed in for smoking at a school sports event (wasn’t on school property, not that that matters) and subsequently was suspended (I agree that I deserve punishment. It was stupid and I’ll never smoke again - it was also really gross). I wasn’t caught by a teacher, a girl that hates me dobbed me in.
Anyway, the guy I was smoking with received a 1 week out-school suspension (meaning he stayed home), whereas I got 2 weeks in-school suspension. They lock me in a cupboard in the principles office (the principle is also a teacher, so I’m completely alone) It’s about the size of a toilet cubicle and they put a desk and chair in the cupboard with me. I’m not exaggerating -they actually physically lock me in, and I’m checked on once a day and allowed out for a 15 minute restroom break and lunch break (while everyone else is in class - understandable that they don’t want me having a social lunch period).
Are they legally allowed to do this? I feel it it a pretty severe punishment, bordering on abuse. I am claustrophobic and scared the whole time. I agree that I deserve punishment - I am not just saying that, but I think this is pretty drastic.
I should also mention that it is a religious school (seventh day Adventist, in Australia) and I am not the religion whereas the boy that got on trouble is a SDA. He gets in trouble constantly. whereas I do not. I have been in trouble a few times but for really silly stuff, like this boy on my bus (and in my class) that bullies me relentlessly and kicks my shins - I told him I had voodoo dolls and that he better stop bullying me. They were Indian worry craft dolls, I don’t even believe in voodoo, but someone told on me and I got in trouble.
What can I do? My dad won’t let me change schools, he won’t listen to me and he works really long hours. (my mum died last year from breast cancer)
I don’t have any adults I can trust and I worry if I do anything that I’ll be punished even worse.
Please some advice?
I don’t need to be berated for smoking, I know it’s stupid, I did it once, and I didn’t even like it. I won’t do it again.
