All About Costumes of Dolls
Filed Under dolls | Comments Off
Burhan.S.Barodawala asked:
The term costume can generally refer to dress and wardrobe, or to the unique style of dress of a particular period, class or people. Costume may also refer to the creative arrangement of accessories in a statue, picture, play or poem, suitable to place, time or other situations described or represented, or to a particular style of clothing worn to represent the wearer as a character or kind of character other than their usual persona at a social event like masquerade, artistic theatrical performance or in a fancy dress party.
Doll costumes are considered as an essential part of the fun of playing with the doll. When doll first appeared, the costumes were in the form of fashion model outfits. Since then, however, outfits can be worn for nearly any situation or occasion.
Children loves very much to play with the beautiful little doll costumes and the fun accessories that came with each outfit. Much attention was given to the creation and design of these miniature costumes. Doll outfits consist of hems, minute buttons, zippers and even linings. The quality finish of these dolls costumes was attained by hand finishing.
There are numerous costumes available for dolls. Here are some tips on getting best costumes for your dolls:
· Begin with typical Barbie and ken doll patterns of clothes.
· Choose the theme or style of your doll’s costume.
· Take into account the type or quality of fabrics.
· Be ready to change your patterns.
· Enjoy with embellishments.
One of the most common places where people see costumes is in theatre, television or in a film. In combination with other features, theatrical costumes can aid actors to portray characters age, profession, gender role, personality, social class and also information regarding the historical period or era, time of day and geographic location, along with the weather or season of the theatrical performance. Often, stylized theatrical costumes can overstate some feature of a character.
Costumes also serve as a platform for children for exploring and role-playing. Children can dress up in different forms; for e.g. characters from fiction or history like princesses, cowboys or pirates, common jobs such as police officers or nurses, or animals which are seen in farms or zoos.
Another very well-liked situation where costumes are used are for sporting events, where people are dressed as representative of their team. Animal costumes which are visually very same as mascot costumes are also trendy among the members of the furry fandom where they are recognized as fur suits.

The Origin Of The Barbie And Ken Dolls
Filed Under dolls | Comments Off
Bowe Packer asked:
There are many children who have a favorite type of toy. This can be teddy bears, Cabbage Patch dolls, Care Bears, soft dogs and cats. They can even be the world famous Barbie and Ken dolls. These two dolls are well known by many people and not just children. While these two dolls are mainly used as toys by little girls, collectors will not hesitate to buy either of these should they come across one.
The Barbie and Ken dolls are made so that they resemble adults. The many different careers and styles of the years have an impact on the lives of these dolls. Today you will find that the world of Barbie has many accessories and items that can be used with either of these two dolls. There are also companion dolls that are of different ethnic backgrounds.
The original Barbie doll was based on a German doll called Bild Lilli. Once Mattel made Barbie and acquired the rights to the German doll, Lilli was soon discontinued. Barbie was then officially given the name Barbara Millicent Roberts. Ken was named Ken Carson. The names for the Barbie and Ken dolls were taken from the names of Ruth Handler, who was the original designer of Barbie.
While Barbie made her debut into the toy market during 1959 at the International Toy Fair in New York, Ken made his appearance during 1961. From 1961 Barbie and Ken have been considered as a couple. Their relationship was a on and off relationship. After a 43 year relationship, the Mattel Company decided that it was time for the two dolls relationship to end.
This separation lasted for about 2 years. In 2006 Barbie and Ken were made into a couple again. While the reason for the separation of the famous couple is probably due to a decline in sales, the reason they are a couple is that probably Barbie doesn’t sound complete without Ken.
While the popularity of both Barbie and Ken is attributed to the clothes and accessories you can buy, the look of the dolls may also play an important role. For many young girls Barbies looks are in keeping with the careers that she keeps getting. This fashion conscious doll has gone from being merely a fashion doll to a pilot, doctor, airline stewardess, astronaut, rock star to even being a fairy tale princess or mermaid.
Now while Barbie and Ken are just toys they are iconic figures. The looks and careers you see these dolls appearing in are an indication of how toy fashions can change. The one constant perhaps is the imagination and the endless hours of fun that a girl can derive from just playing with her Barbie and Ken dolls.

The Bobblehead Doll - A Cultural Icon
Filed Under dolls | Comments Off
Tom Littlepage asked:
The bobblehead doll is a type of doll with its head (which is often oversized in comparison to its body) connected to its body by a spring, so that tapping the doll will cause the head to wobble. This type of doll is also known as a ‘bobbing head doll’, ‘wobbler’, or ‘nodder’. These dolls date back to ancient Japan and China, where they were made with flexible bamboo strips instead of springs. Today’s dolls are more directly descended from German ‘nodders’ dating from the late 18th century, which were made from ceramic or bisque, and ranged in height from about 6 to 8 inches. These dolls were popular in America until around 1930, when interest in them started to fade.
Modern bobblehead dolls first appeared in the 1950s, and were initially made of papier-mache, and then from ceramic. Although the ceramic dolls were popular, they were fairly expensive, and were considered mainly collectors’ items. Eventually, however, manufacturers started making the dolls from plastic, allowing for a cheaper manufacturing process, which made the dolls more affordable.
Early dolls were made to resemble animals and popular cultural characters, and were often used as advertising icons and automobile accessories (one very popular such doll was that of the dashboard ‘hula girl’). Around 1960 Japanese-made papier-mache ‘baseball’ bobbleheads began to be imported into America. These early pieces were generic figures representing teams and their mascots, rather than individual players. Typically, the dolls for all teams would look the same, except that they would be wearing the uniform for the particular team being depicted. During this time there were a few dolls made up to represent some of the more famous players of the day, but they differed from their respective team dolls only by the uniforms they wore. Unfortunately, few of these papier-mache dolls have survived without some sort of damage (usually cracking or chipping), although those that have survived in good condition are now valuable collectors’ items.
In the 1970s, bobbleheads were made of ceramic materials, and became popular for other sports, as well as for popular cultural and cartoon characters. However, by the mid-1970s, interest in the dolls had again died out, and very few new dolls were made for nearly two decades, when they became popular again.
In the 1990s, the dolls began to be made from plastic, which greatly reduced their cost, and facilitated the making of many variations of dolls to represent specific cultural figures and other notable people. After 2000, many different variations of the dolls began to appear, and a number of companies started to offer dolls that could be customized to the buyers’ specifications. Modern dolls that represent specific individuals closely resemble those individuals, even including such things as headbands, scars, tattoos, and hair styles.
The greater diversity of the dolls, and their decreased cost, have, once again, made them a very popular item, and have rekindled interest in collecting them. Today bobblehead dolls have become an integral part of our culture. They have truly become one of the world’s most recognizable cultural icons.
