Good material to use for lifesize dolls?

I’m planning on making some lifesize character dolls, and I need to know of a good type of cloth to use.
Something heavy-duty, not too thin, and not too thick. Something sort of like fleece, but not too fuzzy and stretchy…
Most people tell me to layer up thin cotton cloth, but I don’t like doing that.
Maybe flannel? Or would flannel only fuzz up after time, just like fleece?
OR…..
Would I need to “back up” certain cloth, anyway?
