The authors examined gender and racial preferential behaviour in 108 3- and 5-year-old Black and White girls. Children set up a birthday party for dolls that differed in gender and racial physical characteristics. Whereas White girls showed favouritism towards the doll most closely resembling themselves in both gender and race, Black girls showed most favouritism towards the White girl doll. Black girls were more likely to show preference based on gender rather than race, whereas White girls were equally likely to show race- or gender-based favouritism. Among White 5-year-olds, greater prior interaction with Blacks was positively associated with race-related favouritism (i.e., secondary preference to the White boy doll rather than the Black girl doll). Interracial contact was unrelated to racial favouritism among the other three groups. Results demonstrate the salience of gender identity during the preschool years, and indicate that majority/minority status and intergroup contact shape the development of collective identity and social behaviour.

Sterically-engineered rigid trigonal molecular modules based on 1,3,5-tri(4-hydroxyphenyl)benzenes H1 and H2 undergo O-H…O hydrogen-bonded self-assembly into eight-fold catenated hexagonal (6,3) and two-fold interpenetrated undulated square (4,4) networks, respectively. In the presence of [18]crown-6 as a guest, the triphenol H1 is found to self-assemble into a honeycomb network with hexagonal voids created between three triphenol building blocks. The guest [18]crown-6 molecules are found to be nicely nested in hexagonal enclosures. The empty spaces within the crowns can be further filled with neutral (MeOH/water, MeOH/MeNO(2)) or ionic guest species such as KI/KAcAc to furnish novel multicomponent assemblies, that is, guest subset guest subset host, that typify Russian dolls. In contrast, triphenol H2 is found to yield analogous multicomponent molecular crystals in which the guest crown-K(+) acts as a spacers in the hydrogen-bonded self-assembly that leads to distorted chicken wire networks.

Faces are visual objects that hold special significance as the icons of other minds. Previous researchers using event-related potentials (ERPs) have found that faces are uniquely associated with an increased N170/vertex positive potential (VPP) and a more sustained frontal positivity. Here, we examined the processing of faces as objects vs. faces as cues to minds by contrasting images of faces possessing minds (human faces), faces lacking minds (doll faces), and non-face objects (i.e., clocks). Although both doll and human faces were associated with an increased N170/VPP from 175-200 ms following stimulus onset, only human faces were associated with a sustained positivity beyond 400 ms. Our data suggest that the N170/VPP reflects the object-based processing of faces, whether of dolls or humans; on the other hand, the later positivity appears to uniquely index the processing of human faces-which are more salient and convey information about identity and the presence of other minds.
